Cannabis has been used medicinally for over 6,000 years. In today's world, CBD has been shown to be effective in treating epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, relieving chronic pain in cancer patients and nausea from chemotherapy.

Research is currently underway into the use of medical cannabis for the treatment of mental health conditions: OCD, chronic stress, depression, increased anxiety.

In this article, let's look at the research on the effects of medical cannabis on people's mental health and the results.

CBD and chronic stress

Chronic nervousness and chronic stress have a significant impact on the quality and lifestyle of people who suffer from this disorder. About 33% of people worldwide suffer from excessive stress, 77% experience stress that affects their physical health, 73% develop mental health problems and 48% complain of poor sleep.

Conventional medicine for the treatment of chronic stress offers drugs that have a strong sedative effect. That is, they calm and inhibit mental and emotional activity. In addition, such strong drugs can be addictive.

CBD-containing medications are a great alternative. They promote long-term and stable suppression of psychological and physiological sources of stress, and are not addictive. Using medical cannabis to treat stress can effectively control attacks of anxiety and stress.

The research conducted supports the assertions above. A team of psychologists from the University of Washington found an impaired stress response in people who consumed medical cannabis.

The findings showed that cortisol levels in the saliva of people who took medical cannabis were lower than those who did not take medical cannabis.

Researchers claim that medical cannabis use may build resilience to cortisol spikes in people with strong emotional reactions to stressful situations.

CBD and OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder)

OCD is a disorder characterized by high levels of anxiety, as well as persistent obsessive-compulsive neurosis. With OCD, the sufferer involuntarily has intrusive, disturbing or frightening thoughts (called obsessions). The person constantly and unsuccessfully tries to eliminate the anxiety caused by the thoughts with such compulsive and tedious activities (compulsions).

Some people with this disorder are overly fixated on cleaning, while others are constantly trying to symmetrically align objects around them. And there are those who are fixated on their bodies, such as pulling hair or picking at their skin.

The results of a 2019 Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research study showed that medical cannabis can help treat OCD. The disease affects the parts of the brain that are responsible for the appearance of anxiety and stress response. Cannabis, in turn, impacts behavioral and emotional responses. Also, the results of the study showed that CBD tends to reduce feelings of fear and anxiety in people.

Another study by American scientists showed that CBD has a short-term effect on OCD symptoms and reduces their severity by half. At the end of the study, participants reported a 49% reduction in the severity of obsessions, 60% reduction in compulsions and 52% reduction in anxiety.

But over time, people became addicted to the drug, making it less effective. For this reason, scientists have recommended a combination of cannabis and traditional medication for the treatment of OCD.

CBD and psychosis

According to a British study, medical cannabis can restore brain activity in patients with psychosis because it links human memory and higher mental processes.

During the study, scientists used fMRI to study the brains of 13 patients with psychosis and gave them 600 mg of CBD. The results of the study showed that during memory tasks, the brain activity of the psychosis patients was more similar to that of a healthy brain.

Why does this happen? It's all about the prefrontal cortex and the mediotemporal lobe. The former is responsible for regulating speech, social behavior, personality expression and the will to live. The second regulates memory formation and information storage. By influencing these, CBD helps to improve will-to-life and social behavior, as well as the ability to access memories, which helps in the treatment of psychosis.

CBD and sleep problems

According to the Harvard Health blog, one in five people in the world suffers from poor sleep and sleeps no more than 6 hours a night. Numerous national studies point to the effectiveness of CBD in improving sleep. According to a Consumer Reports survey, 10% of people admitted to using cannabis to improve sleep and noted its effectiveness.

Most use of CBD oil relaxes a person and improves their response to stressful situations, thereby improving the quality of sleep. Researchers have found that CBD works faster, better and its effects last longer than those of sleeping pills.

CBD and depression

According to the WHO, depression affects more than 350 million people worldwide. Depression is a complex mental illness that prevents people from leading an active social life. They have no desire to work, eat, sleep or do things that used to bring them joy and pleasure.

Cannabis has been used since 1621 by Indian doctors to treat depression and its side effects. Nowadays, CBD is an excellent alternative to strong antidepressants with no side effects. Using CBD medication to treat depression, patients experience peace of mind, reduced stress, improved mood and energy, and feelings of anxiety and insomnia disappear.

Cannabis has been found by the University Medical Center Utrecht in the Netherlands to be an effective treatment for depression. According to the study, people taking cannabis had altered reactions to negative events and emotions.

Prospects for medical cannabis

As can be seen from numerous studies, the prospects of cannabis in the scientific and medical fields are very great and can bring many benefits to mankind in the treatment of various mental disorders. Due to its high efficiency, the field of cannabis is also promising in terms of investment.

By investing in cannabis companies, an investor will have the opportunity to become a part of the growing European market and to make a good profit. In the future, the cannabis industry will develop even more rapidly, which will increase the profits of the CBD companies and hence the profits of the investors.
